Texas Tech Red Raiders
After Kansas’ showing against Oklahoma earlier this season, I really thought that Kansas had a really good shot at beating Texas Tech. Afterall, Kansas put up 31points against what I consider to be one of the best defenses in the Big 12. If OU couldn’t completely shut them down, then I figured that our sieve of a defense wouldn’t be able to either.
I was mistaken. Tech dominated Kansas in pretty much every aspect of this game. I really think that my fear was misplaced. I think their basketball team could probably play better defense than their football team. Todd Reesing just wasn’t on today.
A couple of things in the game:
- Rob Stone was doing some reporting from outside of the stadium in the early fourth quarter. He stopped several people (Kansas fans) and asked there where they were going and what the rush was to leave. One of them said that the basketball season couldn’t start soon enough. He has continued to ride the KU fans the rest of the game.
- In the first quarter 2 of Kansas linebackers looked to come through the hole cleared by the lineman untouched. Both proceded to hit the running back at the same time and “decleated” the running back. It was a wicked hit.
- With 2:10 left in the 3rd quarter, Andre Ware (ESPN Commentator), was begging Mike Leach to “call off the dogs”. The game last 60 minutes there Andre. Just because Jack Pardee pulled you from games in the 3rd 20 years ago, doesn’t mean that most teams do that.
- Kansas has some Touchdown Club seating. They end zone seating with awnings, recliners, and plasma TV’s. $2500 a season is what they said it cost. I need me one of those. Here’s a link to see what I’m talking about

Texas Tech beat Nebraska this past weekend. It wasn’t pretty by any means, but it was a win. Say that one more time, It was a win.
When the polls came out on Sunday, there was one oddity that I thought was really striking. The USC Trojans and Florida Gators moved past Texas Tech in the AP poll even though they have a loss on their record to unranked teams. Tech was ranked above USC and Florida for the past 2 weeks. I’m not sure what changed in voters minds, Tech didn’t lose. Maybe the time since they lost made them forget. Maybe they just put the blinders on. Did the voters forget how USC got dominated by Oregon State? USC didn’t come back and win the game, they lost. Did they forget that Florida lost to an unranked Mississippi team? Maybe the high profile school names is what’s making it easier for AP Pollsters to forget the losses on their record. What changed in the past 2 weeks that made a 1 loss team worse than a 0 loss team for the past 2 weeks, and then all of the sudden be better than a 0 loss team?
I’m not trying to say that Tech deserves to be ranked higher than they are. All of the other teams that are above us (Texas, Alabama, Penn State, and even Oklahoma) I can make cases on how they should be ranked above us. But USC lost to an unranked team. Florida lost to an unranked team. Texas Tech beat an unranked team.
People say that good teams find a way to win no matter the circumstances. Texas Tech has done that to this point. They haven’t been pretty in all of their games, but they have won. That can’t be said for USC and Florida.

Texas Tech Red Raiders
Well today is Texas Tech’s first test of their Defense. We face KState today in our first Big 12 game of the year. I really like our chances in this game, but I don’t think that we will be nearly as dominate as we were in the SMU game. KState can put up some offensive numbers, it’s going to be a good litmus test on how improved our defense really is. I think our offense will stay on track and start lighting up the score board. Everyone needs to give KState respect though, they have beat Texas the past 2 seasons when they were looking past them to the next game. My prediction Texas Tech wins 38-17
Tech launched a new website promoting Michael Crabtree and Graham Harrel for Heisman this week. http://passorcatch2008.com While it’s nice to see that they are making the effort, a team has 2 candidates always eat away at each other’s votes. If Tech can keep on it’s winning ways against some tougher competition (Texas, Kansas, OU), then there’s a real shot. I would still have to think that Chase Daniel (Missouri) is the front runner by far, and I wouldn’t put Sam Bradford (OU) that far behind him.
I’m watching the OU vs. Baylor game right now until Tech comes on. Talk about being outmatched. OU just looks like it can do no wrong. Baylor has shown signs that it can/will be better in the future, but just not this year. I really like Art Briles. Baylor did great job in getting him there. Maybe they can get back to their competitive days (Pre Big 12).
