Ray PierceWork goals, performance, stupid, Work
So it’s that time of year at my company when you set your performance goals for the year. I’ve been in the workforce long enough to know that no one likes doing these things, no one takes them serious, and no one ever holds anyone accountable for them.
I think one of the most frustrating things about the whole process is that you are spoon fed exactly what to put in the form so it makes you look like you are thinking solely of the company. Nothing ever directly relates to what you are really wanting to do. For example, in my own mind my #1 goal would be, “Don’t do anything to get fired”. But in reality my goal will be something like “Try to streamline our build process to shorten the time to live for our customer while saving oodles of cash”. While that may sound good odds are that is totally arbitrary and not attainable for me, because I’m at the mercy of my developers.
My top goals would be:
- don’t get fired
- do the best job that you can
- don’t piss off too many people
Those goals are generic and apply to just about any position. You don’t need anything more than that.
But alas, I’ll be trying to figure out the corporate lingo I need to use to make and my boss look better just to tow the company line. I feel so weak.

Ray PierceEntertainment apps, iphone, movies, shazam, Twitter, urbanspoon, wordpress
I finally picked up an iPhone and joined the multitudes of people that are totally immersed in them. I’m spending a lot of time on mine so far, but I figure that the newness will wear off soon enough. One thing that I’m having problems with is not check my email from work. It’s work, I don’t want to check it on the weekend and at night, but I can’t seem to help myself.
I picked up the WordPress iPhone app today. I’m not sure how useful it will be, but it will be another way I can keep the site more up to date. Hopefully I can be more timely with posts than what I’m been in the past. In fact I wrote most of this post with the exception of the links with it.
I’ve also picked up quite a few other apps that seem quite useful right now. The cool thing is that these are all Free. I’ve still yet to pay for any apps.
- TwitterFon – I’ve become part of the twitterati
- Shazam – This has already helped me figure out some songs on the radio that I didn’t know who were. Suggestion pay attention to the road while driving, not the iPhone.
- Movies – This is how I found out what Theaters to go watch Watchmen at.
- Urbanspoon – I use this alot to pick restraunts and rank the one that I’ve been to. I’ve even review some joints.
- WordPress – This article was mostly written with it via my iPhone.

I finally had an opportunity to try Ranch 616. I wasn’t disappointed.
The lunch menu was a great value. Most entree’s were under $10. I had one of the specials of the day, a Venison Frito Pie. It was quite filling and very tasty.
I’ve not had a chance to eat off of their dinner menu, but I hear that it is dramatically different than lunch.
