I was just having this same conversation the other day, and it too started because of Johnny Cash’s cover of “Hurt”.

There’s “I Will Always Love You” originally by Dolly Parton but Whitney Houston’s version is far more popular.

I always preferred The Indigo Girls’ “Romeo & Juliet” over the Dire Straits original.

I’ll have to second a lot of what EC said, especially regarding “Blue Christmas”. Everyone that sings that song since Elvis does it with a country twang. On that same note, Ram Jam’s version of “Black Betty” has become the standard for covering that song.

Eve 6 is on Imeem too. I’m a HUGE fan of Chris Cornell so thanks @oucactus for that suggestion! That’s the kind of cover I love… one that doesn’t make you think you’ve ever heard the song before.

Wow… I don’t know where to start. You’ve got some good ones listed. I’ll have to think on mine! I love John Denver’s ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’ but I also really like Eve 6’s cover. They put a fun spin on it.

@Tasisman I hadn’t ever really listened to Talisman. Sounds pretty good.

@EC Yeah, I agree with the “With a Little Help from my Friends” by Joe Cocker. Awesome song.

The fact that Bobby McFarin can pull that off is amazing.

“With a Little Help from my Friends” by Joe Cocker is easily better than the Beatles’ original.
“Come Together” by Aerosmith is not better than the Beatles’ original.
“Oh, Pretty Woman” and “You Really Got Me” by Van Halen kick the crap out of Roy Orbison and The Kinks’ versions. (p.s. Van Hagar sux)
Stevie Ray Vaughan’s version of Hendrix’ “Little Wing” is better than the original. Sting’s is not.
The Seal+Jeff Beck version of “Manic Depression” is better than Hendrix’.
Elvis’ Blue Christmas is the One True Version and everyone else pales in comparison.
Bobby McFerrin’s voice doing the trumpet part of Miles Davis’ “‘Round Midnight” is freakishly accurate. I still prefer the original, though.
CCR’s versions of “Proud Mary” and “I put a Spell on You” are better than the originals, but you should do yourself a favor and listen to Screamin’ Jay Hawkins just once.

I’ve got more, but time to take EC2 to his bowling league.
