Entertainment Avatar, cool, hype, movie No Comments
So if you haven’t seen the advertisements for Avatar yet, just turn on your TV. You will be inundated with promos for it within 5 minutes or less. That’s the annoying part of big budget films, they over saturate the advertising media with promos. It actually hits theaters on December 18th. Expect to have people waiting in lines for midnight showings.
The trailer showing on the official movie site explains a lot about the movie. http://www.avatarmovie.com/ There are some others around, but I think that one surmises it pretty well. If you feel compelled to follow them on twitter you can. http://twitter.com/officialavatar
I’ve been hearing about this movie for about 6+ months for friends and stuff on the web. I’m not sure that it is a movie that will appeal to the masses because of the fantasy aspect of it, but I do think it will indeed satisfy the geek crowd. James Cameron has out done himself on visual effects for this one, besides breaking the bank to make it. It’s supposedly the most expensive movie ever made. Personally, I think it looks damn cool. I don’t think I’m going to be able to catch it opening weekend since I’m moving, but I’m going to try my best to catch it before Christmas.
From what I’ve seen of comments from the early sneak previews is that the movie is compelling and much better than people expected. Let’s just hope that is true. I’m tired of going to movie that are over hyped and don’t live up to what they are billed as (Twilight, Watchmen, G.I. Joe, Transformers). I’m trying my best not to buy into the hype, but you can only hold out so long when you are being bombarded with it.
So here to hoping it’s not a flop.

Entertainment cover songs, music, renditions 9 Comments
A friend of mine (Craveytrain) and I have been having an on going conversation about great cover songs that we’ve heard. I think it started out with hearing Johnny Cash covering Hurt by Nine Inch Nails. It’s a great song in both rights, but Cash put his distinct stamp on it. Through out this conversation we’ve each pointed out songs to the other one that we had never heard before.
During all of this I’ve also come to realize there’s a difference in the songs. There are the covers, the artist plays/sings the song the same way as the original artist. The renditions, the artist takes creative license and molds the words into a brand new piece of music. I’m finding that I like the cover songs more in general to the renditions. There are exceptions of course, but the covers bring back the memories of the original song. I guess by nature I’m wanting to compare apples to apples. I’m judging the new artist by the standard of the original artist.
I’m guessing that most of these songs were covered by the artists because they meant something to them. At least I would like to believe that over the A&R man coming in and saying this is what you are singing. So here’s a few examples of songs that I have in my collection. (I linked to iTunes as much as I could)
Hurt by Nine Inch Nails
Hurt by Johnny Cash
Abracadabra by Steve Miller Band
Abracadabra by Sugar Ray
Darling Nikki by Prince

This was never released as a single, due to Prince not authorizing it. It still hit #15 on the charts.

There was a Fox in a tree at my Great Aunts house. How it got up there I don’t know, but it was up there most of the night.
